Senior Manager/Director of Project Development – Utility

SolarStone is a full-suite solar development firm offering land acquisition, permitting, interconnection, and engineering services. We are seeking an experienced development manager who can support the company’s fast-growing solar development portfolio.

REQUIREMENTS

Our growth continues to drive opportunity within the company. We are seeking an experienced, self-starter to add to our utility-scale solar development team. A successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to shift between strategic initiatives and tactical execution; work independently and with a team.

 

  • At least 5-8 years of experience in the electrical or alternative energy generation project development landscape. Experience being the boots on the ground, and being the face of the company.
  • Full understanding of the policy, regulatory and competitive dynamics that contribute to a project’s profitability.
  • Outstanding project management skills, and able to flexibly manage work across multiple distinct projects.
  • Self-motivated with a high level of initiative, attention to detail and accountability. Ability to multi-task and work in a deadline driven environment.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to be persuasive in order to achieve goals and outcomes.
  • Understands and has experience working with the legal aspects of contracts. Proven ability to intelligently react to proposed terms when negotiating land contracts.
  • Possess a working knowledge with utility-scale solar interconnection applications and processes.
  • Familiarity with site acquisition, starting with strategic planning for new projects to completing conditional use and/or state permits.
  • Demonstrated experience working with government agencies and boards, including but not limited to public utilities commissions, pollution control agencies, zoning regulators, planning commissions, and elected civic leaders.
  • Ability to work remotely in an independent, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Capable of traveling domestically 30-50% of the time depending on projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in using MS Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drive efforts to create a business case to explore new markets. Responsible for laying out strategies and tactics necessary to achieve the required amount of qualified land under contract.
  • Personally conduct land acquisition responsibilities for potential sites which are conducive for solar operation. This would include identifying nearby infrastructure for transmission and interconnection, while avoiding obvious flaws like floodplains, wetlands, native species habitats, and culturally significant locations.
  • Lead permitting efforts to identify each location’s requirements, coordinate with local consultants and attorneys to prepare, review and submit permit applications and other filings, and represent SolarStone at permitting hearings, including providing expert witness testimonies when necessary.
  • Promote positive stakeholder relationships, including land owners, local residents, and community officials and staff. You are required to maintain a high degree of integrity and professionalism, especially when faced with faux objection.
  • Manage project spending and progress, prepare budgets, update forecasts, and review invoices.
  • Actively manage project risk by making sound decisions on land targets, identifying and addressing potential challenges early, be monitoring key choke points in the process, and use superior problem-solving skills to find better paths forward.
  • Support the company and other teams by providing assistance to other functional areas when time allows. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more on aspects of development and permitting, along with increased exposure to risk analysis, research, and state policies.

Work Environments & Requirement

 

Work is performed both in an office environment and in the field. With frequent travel expected, must be a licensed and fully insure driver. Must be able to sit, stand, bend, twist, walk distances on unleveled soils, and lift up to 20 pounds.
